WAI KŌKOPU
The Waihī estuary, located in Maketū, is in a poor and declining ecological state and does not consistently meet guidelines for safe swimming and shellfish gathering.
Our programme is on a mission to change this. Together, with the community, we are harnessing the power of catchment-wide collaboration and innovation to build healthy, more resilient waterways that will heal the Waihī estuary.

RERE KI UTA, RERE KI TAI
Rere Ki Uta, Rere Ki Tai is a collaborative research project that aims to build more resilient, profitable and healthy farms for our whenua and te taiao (land and environment), whānau (families) and farming communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Together, our collective of Māori, conventional and organic kaimahi pāmu (farmers) and researchers is sharing our knowledge, experience, and science to test ideas at the forefront of soil management. We want to know whether farming in ways that honour the mana and mauri of soil might be better for everyone, and if so, how to do it.
Our goal is to reignite hope and pride in farming in Aotearoa, honouring the Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership between Māori and Pākeha to help restore and strengthen connections between the people who eat food and those who grow it, and between farmers and the whenua (soil) they love.

PROJECT PARORE
Project Parore champions sustainable land management practice, water quality improvement and the
restoration of native ecosystems on both public and private land.
We collaborate with Regional and District Council, community groups and primary sector organisations to raise awareness and increase involvement in the protection of biodiversity and habitat across the eight catchments of the northern Tauranga Harbour.
Our work includes restoration through native planting, weed control, pest animal and predator control, water monitoring, citizen science and research. As well as education and advocacy, we are helping landowners to develop and implement environment plans.
Generous donations of time and money from organisations and local individuals has ensured continuity of our work over the past 18 years. We are a volunteer group at heart and are deeply grateful for the commitment to and passion for our environment shown by our supporters.
Vision
A connected mosaic of productive land and restored native bush, tumbling from the Kaimai forest to our harbour where regenerating wetlands protect our coastal margins.
1.Treasured species like toutouwai, kereru, pekapeka and matuku hurepo thrive in a pest free habitat.
2.Flourishing riparian corridors stretch from hill to ocean, retaining our precious soils and sheltering waterways.
3.There is clear, cool water for threatened kokopu and tuna.
4.A healthy harbour sustains abundant parore, shellfish and thick beds of sea grass.
5.Resilience and sustainability are built into our working landscape through our environmental stewardship.
Project Parore was awarded the inaugural NZ Landcare Trust Catchment Group Award for the Bay of Plenty region at the Ballance Farm Environment Awards 2022.
